SKILL LEVEL: BEGINNER

This ongoing program is available for beginner students and those who have attended our other beginner courses to develop basic art techniques that focus around figurative and realistic drawing and painting.
Taught by Ben Guy,, students will undergo a series of both guided and independent projects which will help them improve not only their ability to make art, but also aid the development of self expression and an understanding of art history and the role of art in life today.
This class is open to new students and is available over the four terms of 2017. Students are invited to do a single term, however, progress will be most noted when repeating attendance over the full year.

SAT 04/02/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Introduction to Drawing Techniques
Through a series of simple exercises students will draw a number of studies that explore the drawing of solid forms in space. Considering the surrounding environment of the objects, you will discover techniques that simplify the struggle of proportion and perspective by considering the whole situation rather than the details of the objects.

SAT 11/02/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Line and Mark Making for Expression in Drawing
Students will use personal and experimental approaches combined with the observational lessons of the first weeks class to understand the importance of personal touch in art making. What makes a drawing powerful? Perfection or connection?

SAT 18/02/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Introduction to Painting - Black and White Studies
Using black and white paint, students will complete a range of simple observational paintings that study tone, brush stroke and paint density. In this class you will be introduced to Master Appropriations where you will learn how to study approaches of past artists.

SAT 25/02/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Introduction to Colour in Painting
Using a choice of simple colours - One or two plus black and white, you will appropriate a Master Painting using a limited number of painting strokes. This is a great process that shows how little is needed in visual language to tell a story.

SAT 04/03/2017 2:30pm-5:00pm Notan Studies
To further the importance of understanding how "little" is needed to paint an articulate image, students will study basic notan techniques which are a wonderful way to commence a complex painting such as a landscape or a portrait.
